I love photographing Rachel because, essentially, we just mess about making up stories around literary themes. We’ve played with Milton and Snow White (apple, anyone?), Palgrave’s Golden Treasury (in the morning, with cognac and cigarettes), and even a spot of Ashbery, bizarrely transposed to an industrial estate in Berkshire. And the old gunpowder mill transported us right back to the post-apocalyptic fiction we both developed a taste for as teenagers. It may be great fun, but we’re also playing with themes like women and power, moral ambiguity, identity and conformity.
